What's Happening
An
exciting new era began for WYMS on Jan. 1, 2005. That's when Radio For
Milwaukee began operating the station for the Milwaukee Public Schools.
WYMS will begin airing it original, Milwaukee-oriented format later this year. Radio
For Milwaukee is currently beginning a comprehensive research project
to help develop programming and our new, groundbreaking format. We're
also in the process of hiring staff and raising additional funds.
Until the new format is developed, WYMS will continue to air JazzWorks, a pre-recorded program.
An
operating contract with MPS, for an initial seven-year term, turned
over day-to-day operations and all operational funding and
programming responsibilities to Radio For Milwaukee. The MPS Board
voted unanimously in favor of the contract in November 2004.
The
district issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) in April 2003 looking for
a company to operate and program WYMS, MPS's radio station. WYMS was
locally produced until April 2002, when the MPS administration, largely
because of the substantial financial subsidy required, began searching
for alternatives to funding a station with tax dollars.
A
small group of local musicians, music lovers and Milwaukee community
supporters formed Radio For Milwaukee to answer the RFP. After putting
together a team of local and national experts, RFM submitted a proposal
on July 16, 2003. RFM was the only team submitting a proposal.
The
proposal was approved by the MPS School Board on September 26,
2003, and RFM completed contract negotiations with the MPS
administration in late 2004.
